Windscreen- Fabbri vs Giva
Tue Feb 26, 2008 9:37 am
Has anyone had the opportunity to compare the Fabbri windscreen with the Giva windscreen as far as quality is concerned. I would appreciate any information anyone has.

Thanks for your time.

I can speak for the Fabbri. It was top shelf, no issues with form, fit or function. It made a huge difference in ride comfort too.

For me, i like the design of the Fabbri screen.
I just ordered the lower screen because the larger screen was to tall and gave me problems riding in the rain.

From what I hear, the Givi is also a very good screen, I just don't like the design

Where can you order a Fabbri screen in the US?

Anyone know of any US sources for Fabbri, or any UK sources that could do the international (/cringe) shipping.

Man, I sure do like the looks of the Fabbri, especially the medium sized one. Have any of you tall guys (I am 6'4") ridden behind the medium one and what do you think about it. I have the Givi on my MP3 250 and it works fine, except it looks a little out of proportion on that bike and it tends to lean toward the rider a bit at higher speeds, as well as flexing a good bit too. I also have the Givi shield on my Silver Wing and it looks and works great.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

This is my screen SECDEM, gives good upper body protection, keeps the visor clear when raining, but can cause quite a lot of wind noise, have to turn my MP3 music up

£82 or about $150 including postage in UK, they do clear and three levels of tint, this is the middle level tint

My Fabbri is great, I am about 6'-1" and it does push a lot of wind on my face and head but the wind is taken off the hands somewhat.

I have a Givi on both the 400 and the 250. Wouldn't have anything else . These wind screens are the taller ones from Givi. Look up on Givi usa.

I have the medium Fabbri on my MP3-250 and love it. I'm 6' even and the wind now hits me around the helmet but I've noticed an increase in comfort while riding on the freeway, much less buffeting from the wind or trucks. It also increased my top speed by 7-8 MPH.

I am 6' 3" tall and drive with a Fabbri 65 cm screen

1. the wind noise is more in compare to the standard screen!
2. the max. speed is higher (approx. 10 km/h)
3. if it rain it is much more pleasant:
normally the rain runs down at the jacket to the trousers
now 90% of the rain (and the dirt) are now at he screen and not at the body
(but I can look over the screen)

I wouldn't like to be without it

Ed, I'm 6'3" and ride with a medium Fabbri. At speed, I experience a lot of wind noise (anything above 40 mph), but no helmet buffetting.

Big complaints about the Fabbri mid-sized screen:

a. the folks at PJ Parts (Fabbri Distributor) are too damn nice
b. very disappointed that there are no visual (sight) defects in windscreen
c. was counting on working on my install for the day but it took only 15 minutes.
d. I installed to increase head shake and wind buffeting but the screen had just the opposite effect.
e. I prefer a windscreen that creaks, moves, and makes noise: unfortunately this screen doesn't do any of this.
f. I enjoy riding with the windscreen cutting right through the middle of my vision. Too bad this windscreen allows for a non-impaired sight line.
g. I like ugly and this windscreen ain't

The official Givi product photo seems to be the only image available, but to my eye at least it is more attractive by far than any of the medium windscreens.  It seems like it might go well with a set of handguards.

The question is, does its extra 16cm height provide enough comfort or mileage benefit to be worth bothering?

5'10" here. I can't speak for the Givi, but I have the Fabbri medium and am absolutely satisfied with it. Would not hesitate to buy again.

Black plastic trim
Tue Mar 04, 2008 1:10 pm
This is to line the Y shaped panel
http://www.go2.agriplus.net/mp3_first.htm#Mod

Click the green link to see picture.

Its a bit fiddly but stops the screen fretting against the panel edge.

Black Strip
Tue Mar 04, 2008 3:52 pm
Here is what your should do:

a. spend 20 minutes or so fiddling with the placement of the black strip along the edge of the windscreen.
b. mount the windscreen
c. ride to discover that it will, after a short while start to slip off.
d. rip the striip off the windscreen
e. come to the conclusion that it makes no difference in looks or performance
f. learn from the lesson.....<g>

Black strip
Tue Mar 04, 2008 6:07 pm
Thank you 87andstillriding. Where would you mount the black stirp before you decide to rip it off. Dose it go along the top of the screen or behind the plastic where the screen is fastened to the scooter.

Thanks

Mick

That Strip
Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:22 pm
In my opinion it fits to the bodywork edge as shown in my pic.

Since fitting it has stayed in place without any problem. I doubt that it has much practical value.

Thanks roadster. I didn't notice it the first time I looked at your picture. I still have not attempted to install the screen. Did you have any trouble installing yours?

Thanks,

Mick

Fitting Fabbri...
Wed Mar 05, 2008 8:36 pm
..was completely straightforward.
Remove the Piaggio badge by sliding a thin but not sharp blade under the right hand side viewed from the front. this is where the sprung side of the clip is, you shouldn't need much force to depress the clip enough to lift the badge out. This gives access to the one screw that has to be removed.

All the holes line up nicely. The rubber bushes might be hard work in cold weather but I used spray on rubber grease to make this easier. Come to think of it I probably left the old screen indoors for a couple of hours to warm everything up!

The aforementioned strip needs trimming to length after fitting and its a little trickey to replace the body trim which has to be slid under the ears of the screen by easy the them up a little. This is also helped by lubricating the rubber bushes that the trim panel fits in to.

Bushing
Tue Mar 18, 2008 3:02 am
One thing to notice is that the bushings that go through the grommets are two different lengths, four long and two short. The short ones go on the bottom.

I just put the Fabbri medium windscreen on my MP3 today. I got it from PJ's parts. I followed the directions on the Dutchman's post and 15 minutes later it was on. This is a great forum. Thanks to everyone who contributes.

For those who complain about the Fabbri directing wind at their helmet, I recommend adding the Laminar Lip. I have had the Lip on my Fabbri for a few months now, and I have no complaints.

Which specific LaminarLip did you install? I noted on their website that there are several different styles. Did you get the sidewings, too? Finally, how tall are you? I'm 6'3" and have the medium Fabbri windscreen, and the wind hits me directly in the faceshield!

Is it better to add the lip or just get the taller windscreen?

I am 6 ft. tall. I should also note that I added foam to the front of my seat, so I sit higher and farther back than is possible on a stock seat. I ordered the Piaggio X9 model, no wings. This model is slightly wider than the Fabbri screen. Wider is not bad for deflecting wind. The Aprilia Atlantic 500 model might be a closer fit. You could call Laminar regarding the size difference.

The curve of this Lip comes fairly close to the curve of the Fabbri, though I did have to re-position the sticky discs. This is easy to do as Laminar sends a spare set with the Lip. These stick-on discs don't look like much, but they really do the job.

I would say that the Lip is a safer option than a tall screen, because you can position the Lip exactly where you want it, depending on your height. If you look at the photo of my screen, the Lip could have been positioned either higher or lower by 2-3 inches.

Following jmd's recommendation, I added a Laminar Lip to my Fabbri as well. I got the 16" wide cruiser model. After some experimentation (and some new Velcro from Radio Shack, which I cut into "dots") I installed it so it is about one inch higher than the Fabbri.

It does help, but not as much as I was hoping for. Maybe I was being unrealistic. Anyway, the wind is off my face and comes around the sides. (Earplugs are a big help - the Hocks Noise Brakers work really well.) The bike rides faster and is very stable.

I am 5'11" tall.

Michael, you should try moving the laminar lip up as far as you can, still having at least two of the supervelcro dots they supply with it in place.
I had one on my Scarabeo 500 and road with it that way a long time.
A little movement upwards can make the difference. One inch over the top of the windscreen is not much, mine was probably 3 inches at least.

Thanks for the suggestion, Rob. One inch is what LL recommends, but I am not averse to some more tweaking in the pursuit of perfection. I don't want to be looking though it, however, so I may be limited by the sight line. I'm going to be doing something soon to raise my seating height, so I'll probably try it then.

The supervelcro (as recommended by the LL people) I got is available at Radio Shack for speaker mounting. They call it "Hi-Temp/Hi-Strength Superlock Fasteners" which come in strips that can be cut to desired size and shape. It's really strong stuff.

Here's another solution someone might like to experiment with: the Variotouring spoiler. It is multi-adjustable. The problem is figuring out which model would fit our windscreens.

Anyone here live in RI? A trip to the store would be the best bet for a good fit. This spoiler thingy looks better than the ones that stick on. I think I would be interested.

Me too, once I knew which one to use on the MP3-500. All this talk of sticky pads, velcro, and dremels was getting me down.

Don't knock the 3M sticky pads. They really work. The downside of the Variotouring spoiler is you've got holes in your screen, if you find out its not working for you.

True, I've just never had a lot of faith in glues and velcro. I DO have faith in duct tape<g>. Me and Red Green would get along just fine.

I was just looking at the flash graphic of the screen and thought, wouldn't it be cool if it was automatic? ie, it stays 'down' unitl you are really moving and then automatically adjusts up.
