MPG
Sat Mar 01, 2008 12:46 am

Ok today I went on a little ride on the 400 and got 66.8 MPG. Flat road with some hills and cruising speed of 60 to 65 MPH ( rather boring ) I got 66.8 MPG . Not bad when not using the throttle as a switch. My throttle lock helped to hold the 60 65 mph speed. So you can get good gas mileage if you just slow down. I now have 765 mi so MPG could get better. Will be getting my first service next week. Love my 400.

Oh, forgot to mention after fill up I went home on Hwy 80 at 70 to 75 mph. I know that I didn't get 66 mpg lol lol.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new scoot! I think that extra 150cc will make all the difference in the world on your frequent romps down to the Sacramento area.

You mpg might even be better then your 250 when you're climbling through the Sierras on your way back to Reno. Heck your rpm's will be lower, and you won't have to run at full throttle to make it over Donner Summit!

I can't find the billing paper work at the moment. My dealer ordered it from Throttlemeister .com . Try that. The throttle lock takes the place of the handle bar weight and looks great.

Captain John

I think your right about the extra 150cc. It seems to make a lot of difference. I can't wait to take it over Donner Pass. I wonder if it has more power at sea level like the 250. I bet it cuts an hour or so off the time it takes to get to Sacramento. Time will tell. I am looking forward to summer.

I get five more MPG around town when I use the Amoco/BP 93 octane premium. The 250cc MP3 gets 61 around town and 66 highway with that gas.

I know we're on different sized gallons over here, but I've filled up for the first time today & seem to be getting 75mpg+, which is more than I expected.

Compared to what? 89 or 91.

I run Sunoco 91 octane and have been getting 57.5 MPG. don't know about 87, that will never see my tank.

91 is recommended Octane so any more is just a waste and just causes Carbon Build up from unburned fuel.

FYI:the higher the octane SLOWER the fuel burns?

Last 3 tanks on my 500 have been 59, 61, 61 all using 87 octane. Mostly 2-lane country rode driving with not alot of passing opportunities.

Usually in my regular city/hwy I only have 2 positions, wide open or nothing. But I havent taken the time to do calculations there yet.

A U.S. gallon is 3.8 liters. If my memory is correcty from my time in Canada, I believe an Imperial gallon is 4.5 liters.

4.54 to be exact, close to 20 percent difference between Imperial and US gallons.

Sorry. Compared to 91. I didn't know Icould get 93 in town till I stumbled on it at a BP a month ago. It made a big difference. I was hovering around 57 MPG too on 91 octane. Another difference is that the BP has separate pump handles for each grade. I always wondered how much of the low grade gas the customer before me pumped was still on the hose. With a three gallon (two gallon fill) tank there could be a good portion of low grade in the fill.

my last three tanks have all been almost exacty the same

fuel light comes on at 160 to 162 miles since last fill up...i usually fill up at about 170 miles...putting in about 2.8 gallons...

getting 61 to 62 mpg

i find that this is the mileage i get in either city riding (we don't have a lot of stop and go, mostly go) or back highways with the speed limits are around 60...if i go city speeds or if i go between 50 to 60 mph, i get 60 mpg

if i go on the main highways and do 75 mph i get 50 mpg...and if i'm doing a lot of 85 mph i get 45 mpg

but i mostly do the city and smaller highway riding, so i am happy with filling up the gas every 170 miles...

would love it if this girl had a 4.2 gallon tank instead of 3.2...but it is what it is...plus if it had a 4.2 gallon tank standard, i would probably be here wishing it had a 5.2 gallon tank...

but to be able to go over 200 miles between fill ups would be nice...

still she is a good machine and i am quite happy with her...

g

facts...2500 miles on her, riding at 5000 to 7000 feet above sea level, 180 pound rider on board, givi windshield, no engine or exhaust mods (yet)

It must be the altitude - I rarely get more than ~120 miles before the reserve light comes on. Mark you that's nowhere near empty.

maybe...maybe also we don't have nearly the traffic london has...my 6 mile commute takes less than 15 minutes...mostly 40 mph and maybe hitting 3 or 4 stoplights and two stop signs...stop and go is tough on mileage...as is high speed touring...

also i haven't been using my throttle as a switch...i still beat the cars out of the light and i still keep ahead of the cars, but i don't "floor it" out of every light and turn...

I have stayed at a steady 50 MPG + or - a little, but the engine only has 1600 miles on it, so it is hardly broken in. Maybe a windshield is the way to increase slipperyness and aerodynamics?

I have no explanation for it, but I seem to get 75 mpg on my 500.
This is mostly around town ( and I WOT it at every light when I am up front).
But there are some joy rides which average maybe 65 mph. 75 usually tops.
The mileage has gone up of late (3000 on the odometer now).
I have been resisting the idea that my mileage could be that high, thinking
maybe I was messing up somehow. This time I was vigilant, and at the
start of the "red zone" I have filled up now a number of times with 2 gals,
with 150 miles on the trip setting.
I don't see how it could be the altitude, since my cars get normal mileage.
I almost worry the machine could be running excessively lean or something,
as I know this is not normal. ( If that is a stupid idea, forgive me, I don't
have a mechanics brain).
And no need to loan me a calculator, even I can figure 2 gals and 150miles
equal 75 mpg. Premium gas by the way 91 octane.

My calculator remark was in pure jest, but I have a different method for checking milage.
I fill up my tank to capacity and then set the trip meter. When I fill up again, I divide the amount of miles traveled by the amount of gas I just put it in down to the exact amount.(2.3 gals. or whatever)
Try that method instead of the 150 mile method and see if you still come up with 75 mpg,s

I use emptynest's method also to figure my MPG. Tad over 50mpg on my 500 with all kinds driving (foothills, freeway and in town.)

I only get 60 mpg normally on my Fuoco - and that's Imperial gallons! 75mpg for US gallons is pure self-delusion.

It ain't normal Jim, I am first to admit, but I will document with photos next go around. Of course, that really proves nothing ( I could easily be cheating, just by adding a little gas along the way). But you trust me, no?

Hey. Maybe I AM delusional!

91 octane is not available in some parts of US.

I agree with jimc that 60mpg sounds about right. Less if the mp3 500 mainly lives in city traffic.

I thought you might have guessed it, but I went out and checked.
Miles it is, just the way I thought it was set.
I am hoping to spend some time on the trike tomorrow,
and I will check and double check, and make it an excuse to ride
for a couple of hours. I will document with a little video, just for fun.
I will check the miles against my GPS.
My sanity, or lack thereof, will be established once and for all!

today i only got 53 miles just before the red zone. it was probably around 30 mpg or less. Do you think these bikes ever need a valve adjustment?
