For $50 + shipping, I'll take a set. Would we pay you? I'd rather pay you than some guy I've never seen or spoken to. Do you take paypal or do you want a check?

I haven't got a clue. I guess make them the same size as the ones on your bike.

Write my name down and when you get 1/2 the people you need, PM me with your paypal details and I'll zip the cash right over.

Can you post a pic of someone sitting on the scooter useing the foot peg, so I can get an idea of how it would work? I'm 5 foot 10, so am I too tall to use this on the 500?

I am definitely interested. Some more pictures would be nice. I would like to be able to put the pegs further "forward" as I am 6'4" tall. Maybe I can find an "offset" to put the pegs further away.

Remember, with the front wheels, there is only so much forward that you can do. Unless you mount the pegs to the front wheel sprockets

Now forward and down would be just as good, in my book. I need to get my knees lower than my hips. Old bones and all that.

Can you show a side shot. I think I get the picture, A bolt runs through the side and that is your peg? It is not really clear in the pic though.

Thanks.

Lift up the rubber mat on the floor board and you will see a bolt...I think the foot-peg brackets use that same hole with a longer bolt.

I bought a cheap mig (wire) welder and decided to see what I could come up with on my own, as I was tired of waiting. If you are going to do your own welding you will have to pick up some extra hardware.

If you want make your own, here is what I did.

Tools needed = drill, sawsaw or jigsaw with metal cutting blades, chalk or crayon (to make where to cut and drill the steel), a vice, various clamps to to act as extra hands, and some sort of welding rig. If your are doing your own welding, then a grinder is nice too to cleanup after you are finished welding the parts.

Step one, buy the foot pegs you want to use. Then take them to a hardware store, and buy some extra nuts that will fit the threads on the foot pegs.

Step two, go to a welding shop, I found someone who does welding in town, and they do alot of trailer hitches and such. I picked up some 3/4 inch square steel bar stock from their extras pile for free. The owner of the shop said that he wasn't allowed by his insurance company to do any work on motorcycles, but that he would make anything I wanted, if I wasn't to specific on the use of the item. ( I figured I would kludge something up, then take it to the welder, and have hime make me a fresh one, all nice and clean. It turns out that I didn't need his services, but you might.)

Step Three, take the bike apart For the 500 you need to take off the rear side panels, then the center cover, then the floorboards and centerbottom covers. When you do that you will have access to the frame of the bike.

Step four, the right side footpeg mount will need to be about 4.25 inches long. The left side is actually shorter than that because of the stock horn mount. There is a hole in the frame where you can put a bolt to mount the footpegmount, so you need a drill to make your hole in the bar stock. You need to make a second hole to allow the existing bolt some room.

Step five, cut down the center of one end of your barstock, about an inch. Then cut sideways to lop that piece off. Thats needed so everything fits when you try to put the plastice back on later. Place your nut in the end you just cut, and weld it on. Then bolt the footpeg mount to the bike.

Step six, cut a hole on the centerbottom plastic, so you can screw in your footpegs. Mine are NOT pretty , but you can't see how bad a job I did, so no matter.

Step seven, put your bike back together. Note, the left side footpeg mount has to be shorter than the right because of the horn mount. With only one bolt in it, it can bend the frame piece its mounted to if you put any weight on it. So I picked up a replacement bolt to replace the original existing bolt that was long enough to go completely thru my footpeg mount, so the left side has TWO bolts holding it on. Very solid, not going to bend anything.

As you can see from the pictures, this is pretty involved, and my welding skills blow But, they were good enough to get the job done. Honestly, the WORST part of the entire project is cutting the plastic. Thats never fun.

What, no comments about this at all? I can say that having these foot pegs allows me to stretch my legs out more, and makes for a much more comfortable ride.

EMTWO, You are the man. I'd be afraid to take one screw off my scooter but after seeing your pictures, it sort of built my confidence. One question: Can the same thing be done for the rear passenger? My wife's feet sometime brush against my calves when putting my feet down on a stop.

I have the 500, you have the 400? My 500 has no metal up high where the original rear footboard is. However, in my 5th picture, the metal bar that runs down the side goes right under the rear footboard. Just all that plastic makes the stock rear foot position about 2-3 inches higher. So you probably could attach a foot peg bar there. It would be at the same 'height' as the front pegs, and would have to come thru the plastic too.

If you want to hide your raw cut plastic hole cut, try to find a large electrical grommet plug or rigging grommet.

Added pegs today. I still need to get plugs for the ends of the tubing.

The "dog bone" handlebar risers (look like connecting rods), pegs, and a length of 1" tubing came from Rusty Riders on Ebay.

The new footboard covers are made of 1/16" thick aluminum diamondplate. Each is anchored by two large machine screws (longer versions of the Piaggio screws) and 10 sheet metal screws. The outboard screw anchors were already there under the rubber pad; the inboard screws attach to speed clips on a strip of aluminum and correspond to the alignment/anchor holes for the OEM rubber pad.

The pegs are great for my long legs. I think they'll be the first thing to scrape in tight corners, so I will extend them only for highway riding.

Yes, I'm jealous now. I might have to consider those for my 500. Hey, can you post a pic of you with legs on the pegs? From different angles?

It'd be nice to see them extended and someone sitting on the bike from the front and side to see how it look and what sort of extension it gives you.

Again, beautiful job, your scoot is quickly becoming the mod mobile(though Smrf might give you a run for your money)

Cool!

What size footpegs?

Did you have to drill into the floorboard to bolt down the tube to which you attach the dogbones?

Is the connection between the dogbones and the tube and pegs a "pressure fit", in other words you just tighten the end of the dogbone around them?

Thanks for posting that.

I'll try to get a photo of me on the bike with my feet on the pegs.

The pegs are generic, and the pair cost only $9 plus shipping! (link)

The pegs include U-clamps and thick, tapered washers to hang on a tube. I didn't mount the pegs that way, but I did put the tapered washers to good use: They're inside the bottom of each dogbone, along with four flat washers between them and larger washers on the outside, to center the through-bolts. The dogbone clamps down on the washers, and the through-bolt holds the peg. It's very secure yet easy to adjust if needed.

Like UFO's brackets, they're not bolted through to the frame—even the large machine screws only hold major plastic components together. The diamondplate bears the stress; that's why I added the strip of screw anchors on the inboard side of the footboards. The plastic flexes a little bit, but I think it'll be OK. I'm only resting my feet on the pegs, not pressing hard on them, and because of the angle I couldn't stand up on them even if I wanted to.

Oh, I did have to drill into the floorboard in two spots on each side, to make room for the bolt heads on the bottom of the tube. I used carriage bolts, which have pretty minimal heads, but still had to clear space for them.

I would have liked to bolt to frame but couldn't see a good way to do it without welding, and I have no welding equipment or experience. BTW in addition to normal hand tools (plus Clecos and a pop riveter), I used a band saw, belt/disk sander, and drill press. It could be done with just a jigsaw, hand drill and files, but it would take a lot longer!

The piece of aluminum diamondplate alone was $33. The rest of the stuff cost about $30 or so. I had scads of speed clips in stock; otherwise add a few dollars for them, plus plain aluminum sheet for the inboard strip. The 1" bar that came with the dogbones was just the right length for both sides after being cut in half.

The other nice thing about this setup is that it would be super easy to change the angle of the pegs: just loosen the two Allen screws on top of the dogbone. However the angle I chose seems right for me.

If anyone wants to do this, I'll gladly send them the paper template I made for cutting the inboard strips and the diamondplate. I also have a few more photos of the construction process.

Glad y'all like this. It's the last major mod I can think of for the bike, except for having the seat reshaped, which I'll do over the winter.

The only reason I like my pegs..Is that I can streach my legs on them if I want..And some times I have part timers and forget 2 put them up on a turn..And I don't have to worry about them touching the pavement..I luv my pegs..But this is what I want 2 see..What other people come up with..And it looks good..
