Glasseye's Cannonball Update
Mon Sep 11, 2006 3:12 am
Tough day today, 360 miles up and over the Cascade mountains.

Bike ran well for the most part.

I came in second, Stan Obal arrived first. Both Kymco People 250's.

We did the run of 360 miles in 7 hours. Stan beat me by 2 minutes.

I had lost my rear brake with 35 miles left to go and could not stay with him thru the last of the twistys.

Dam, I could have been a contender....

more tomorrow

R

I'll keep an eye out for ya....

day 2 Cannonball '06

John Day Oregon to Hailey Idaho, 368 miles

Today was a very fast day of riding. The 4 stroke 250's started out early setting a blistering pace and never really slowed down. I held the Kymco people 250 wide open for some 250 miles before refueling(with extra fuel cell), then back on the gas until the end.

Stan Obal was once again the winner of the day traveling the 368 miles in 5 hours and 55 minutes, what a ride he put on today. Rolf Soltau was second on his Vespa GTS with JD Merriweather third riding the same model. I arrived next finishing fourth in 6 hours and 15 minutes. I could have placed better but for some confusion about hotel names cost me some time in Hailey. Not bad really, but Stan will be hard to beat.

Alot of wildlife on the road today as there were some smokey fires in the Sawtooth mountains and the deer and other assorted critters seemed to be around the highway more than usual. Found myself within a few feet of a whitetail deer and was 'brushed' by a startled quail.

The smoke cleared mostly as we traveled east and the skys were clear by the time we arrived in Hailey. I has been nice to ride a dependable bike and have some time to unwind. The vintage riders are really working hard as the bikes are slower and so far have been maintenance intensive.

Tomorrow we ride the Rocky mountains and go thru Grand Teton National park. We will cross our highest pass of the entire ride at around 9700 feet. The fuel injected bike should have an advantage, but we crossed a 8200 foot pass today and the Kymco People 250 took the day.

until tomorrow.....

Rich Glass.....aka glasseye

I'll keep an eye out for ya....

glasseye -

Get the word out to the other riders that you'll have some goodies waiting for you in Fort Wayne Saturday morning...

I'm setting up at the following location on your map:

10:16 AM - Mile 123.9
Turn LEFT (East) onto Lake Ave. for 1.7 mi.
[Inwood Drive & Lake Ave]

Props to Woodson Motorsports-Vespa of Fort Wayne for kicking in some Bottled Water/Plexus Visor Cleaner/Bike Wipe Down spray & Microfiber Towels. Also a big thanks to Ellison Bakery Co. for some REALLY yummy Strawberry Shortcake Cookies that are fresh from the oven.

I'm also going to have some fresh fruit for you to munch on. Since everyone has been so generous, I won't be able to fit it all on the ET4, so I'll have my Scion Box there blasting some mad house beats (and maybe some PBR for the folks stuck in the SAG wagons)

Is there anything else you guys might want to help you along????
(Someone suggested some Monkey-Butt powder, but I'm not going there)

If you get a chance, let me know what I can do, otherwise see 'ya Saturday morning !!!!!

BTW - The weather is supposed to be great...

Ack! Disaster is right! That's NapaCoach's worst nightmare. Glad it let go. You able to get another belt?

Another day in the bank.....

Ames Iowa to Merrillville Indiana.....around 350 miles.....6 hours &45 minutes.

Route was a mess with alot of strange twists and traffic galore thru Illinois. This place is like an ant farm....

I trashed my bike yesterday but was able to borrow a belt from another Kymco rider and had the bike towed to a shop where I repaired things and still finished the day.

I got back in the race today.

The rides have ALL been fast fast fast. Flat out from the start, every day.

I do not have the fastest bike in this so I have to limit my mistakes and take advantage of the mistakes of others....

Worked out that I arrived second by 5 minutes today.

I need to do better to climb back into contention, that and have some help from the scooter gods.....

Tomorrow we are off to Cleveland....

2500 miles behind us and 850 left to go......

time to suck it up and ride hard....

I split my photos and comments on Saturday's ride into Cleveland into another thread. Sorry for the hijack, Rich! I don't know if I saw you or not.
